Essential Work Accessories

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to the work accessories edition of my work wardrobe series. One of my first posts was on the 14 key pieces that are in my work wardrobe that I wear day in and day out. I also talked about the key jewelry pieces that I wear both at work and as part of my casual wear. The final piece of the puzzle are accessories that help pull everything together. These pieces help me make the most of my clothing options. My must have work accessories include:

  1. Neutral Structured Handbag

Black is always a safe choice, however,  I also find beige, gray, blush or a soft metallic very versatile. I opt for a more structured style as it comes across more polished and professional. I also always check before buying a handbag that I can fit a small folder / notebook in for work. You may also want to check that your laptop will fit as well. You can probably tell from my previous posts that I have built up a collection of these. They work for pretty much any setting as I tend to lug around a lot of stuff!

  1. Black Pumps

A classic basic that pretty much goes with everything. I probably wear mine at work at least twice a week. I have black leather version with a skinny heel (which I’ve had for three years from Club Monaco). However, there are so many variations that could work as well (patent leather, suede, velvet, block heels).

  1. Nude Pumps

I love nude pumps as they elongate the legs and, similar to the black pumps, they tend to go with everything as well. I wear these more during the warmer months of the year when pantyhose / tights are not required (May to early October).

  1. Statement Pumps

I find having a couple of pairs of fun shoes add more variety to your wardrobe and can really “step up” a neutral outfit. I love bold colours (red, hot pink), fun patterns (snake, leopard, florals), colour block or embellished (i.e the rock stud style). Some examples from my previous posts are here and here.

  1. Silk Scarf

Another way to add interest to a basic outfit. Tie it around your neck, on the handle of your purse, belt it with a dress, there are so many options!

  1. Black Belt

Another basic which instantly add a layer of polish to your outfit. I often wear thicker belts (1-2”) with my pants and thinner versions with pencil skirts and around my waist with a dress. I often go to my cobbler to get extra holes punched in so I can wear it around my hips or around my waist.

  1. Accent Belts

I love having a variety of skinny belts to wear with my pencil skirts and dresses. If you are feeling extra adventurous, you can co-ordinate colours and patterns with your statement pumps or scarves!

What are your go to work accessories?

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are having a great week. Here is a sweater that I recently got at Nordstrom’s on sale (40% off) that has ruffles / statement sleeves which are big this season. The sweater makes quite a statement for the price and I thought it would be fun to add to my fall wardrobe! I’ve paired it with jeans and my favourite gold and gray accessories (I’ve linked similar options above and below).

Styling Tips for the Sweater:

  • I chose to wear skinny jeans to offset the volume of the top.
  • Fitted trousers would also look great or any bottoms that generally don’t add volume.
  • I chose to wear this with a long necklace to elongate the look. A necklace with a lighter weight would likely get lost with the volume of the sweater.

Gucci Belt

Item Details

1. Top Left: The Original Gucci Belt | 2. Top Right | 3. Bottom Left | 4. Bottom Right

. . . . .

I’ve received some questions on the Gucci Belt I was wearing in last Friday’s post. It is the Pearl Double G Gucci Belt which is definitely an investment piece. I decided to buy this belt as I liked the style and thought it would “elevate” my look at work and my casual wear which are typically more reasonably priced items.

I generally find that belts are a good entry item into luxury goods as they often cost a fraction of what a high end designer bag would cost and are easy to coordinate with lots of different outfits (especially if it is in a neutral colour).

That being said, you don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars to get a similar look! I’ve found three great alternatives (all under $30) that have a very similar feel. I love the pearl embellishments in all of these pieces as it blends modern and classic and pairs well with classic pearl accessories.

I also came across this Gucci dupe on Amazon (non-pearl version) which is also a great alternative (only $15!!!).

Styling Tips for the Gucci Belt or Look-a-likes:

  • I typically wear mine with jeans with either a shorter top or  a longer top where I can tuck it in (either fully or just at the front) where I can see the belt
  • I also wear it with my black dress pants and a blouse at work
  • You could also wrap it around the top or band of a pencil skirt or midi skirt
  • I bought mine in a size where I can also cinch it around my waist with a dress at work. This will also work with coats if they aren’t too thick
